Deputy Director of News Gathering 

This is an exciting and demanding role based at our international news client in West London 

The Europe Newsgathering team work closely with other international hubs to set the network’s editorial agenda. The team commission news and current affairs stories as well as special series with original journalism from the vast network of staff and freelance correspondent teams in London and across Europe. These stories may be planned in advance or assigned for immediate, on-the-day use on
their 24-hour broadcast channel and digital platforms.

The Role

•  Reports to the Director of Newsgathering, covers for him/her when s/he is absent, on assignment 
or on leave
•  Assists with overseeing all Newsdesk operations and coordinating news coverage across 
Europe
•  Assists the Director with managing and assessing the performance of the Input team, including 
the staff and freelance cameras and correspondents
•  Works closely with the EPs of Output and Digital and Line Producers to ensure the broadcast and 
digital teams get the content they need to build successful shows
•  Assists Director of Newsgathering with managing network of stringers and freelance 
correspondents, maintains and manages usage-tracking databases and flags issues as required to the 
Director and the Sr Newsroom Coordinator
•  Assists with maintaining the Input rota and keeps across leave requests, in coordination with 
the Director and the Sr Newsroom Coordinator
•  Ensures the highest standards of quality of commissioned packages, and - in consultation with 
the Director of Newsgathering - provides feedback to correspondents and field camera operators on 
how their work can be improved
•  Assists the Director with all matters related to recruitment of both staff and freelancers to 
ensure that all shifts are covered as needed
•  Builds close relationships with opposite counterparts in the other corporate hubs, to ensure smooth 
coordination at an Assignment Desk level between the regions
•  Attends daily and editorial meetings and, where required, represents Director of Newsgathering 
and chairs such meetings
•  Maintains database of freelance fixer and producer resources across Europe, seeks approval from 
Director as needed to add new names to existing databases
•  Takes charge of special editorial projects as required and requested by the Director
•  Works as required on call at weekends and on public holidays, sharing such duties when requested 
by and with the Director
•  Maintains database of languages spoken by staff and freelancers working in London

•  Works with the Senior Planning Editor to ensure next-day, weekly and longer-term plans are in 
alignment with Output requirements in all regions
•  Works with the Digital EP and Senior Digital Producers to ensure that day-to-day newsgathering 
is in alignment with requests for content across the company's European digital and social-media platforms
•  Goes on assignment to coordinate special coverage when required by the Director, particularly in 
cases of major news events
•  Performs any other duties as required by the Director of Newsgathering, Chief Editors and 
Managing Director.

 

Requirements:

•  Experience in a senior newsroom role
•  At least five years of desk experience at an international newsroom, you will have strong 
editorial and logistical skills, with good knowledge of business news and global current affairs.
•  Ability to lead a team
•  Demonstrate experience of dealing with breaking news and remaining calm under pressure
•  A creative flair to deliver original newsgathering
 

Salary details on request

 

Average of 40 hours per week on roster shift based in West London.
